Background:Females with hormone-sensitive PCOS (PCOS) fail to achieve androgenetic-like endometrial hyperplasia (EHP) in a clinical setting. The objective of the current study was to examine the effect of a combination of clomiphene citrate and a letrozole-containing oral treatment on serum levels of testosterone, LH, and FSH in PCOS patients undergoing surgery.
Methods:A total of 12,062 patients were included. We compared the levels of testosterone, LH, and FSH in patients undergoing surgery with those in a control group (n=936). We then used the Arimidex-Clomiphene Citrate (ACR) (n=738) and letrozole-Clomiphene Citrate (LCF) (n=738) groups.
Results:We observed a significant increase of serum levels of testosterone (p<0.01) and FSH in the letrozole-Clomiphene Citrate (LCF) group compared to the ACR group (p<0.05). The increase of serum testosterone (p<0.01) and FSH (p<0.01) was mainly due to the letrozole-Clomiphene Citrate group. The increase of serum FSH was also more pronounced in the ACR group. The increase of LH and testosterone was mainly due to the letrozole-Clomiphene Citrate group, whereas the increase of FSH was mainly due to the LCF group.
Conclusions:We observed a significant increase of serum levels of testosterone (p<0.01) and FSH in patients undergoing surgery with the letrozole-Clomiphene Citrate group compared to the ACR group.
